The “Palumpa Pesties”
In Palumpa, officially named Nganmarriyanga, one of Australia's remote Aboriginal communities, a quiet revolution is taking place. Located 362km southwest of Darwin in the Northern Territory, this community is tackling the challenge of accessing essential services head-on – by training their own.
For the past two years, Shane Rich from MPL Training Centre has been working with local community members, upskilling local residents in Urban Pest Management. It's practical training that creates real employment opportunities while building long-term self-sufficiency in a location where calling in external contractors isn't simple.
Breaking Barriers, Building Futures
What makes this program even more remarkable is the community's commitment to inclusivity. Women, like “Palumpa Pestie” Melanie Cook (pictured above), are stepping into pest control roles – a trade traditionally dominated by men – and proving themselves as skilled technicians. This isn't just about pest management; it's about challenging stereotypes and opening doors. For women in remote communities, these opportunities create pathways to financial independence, professional development, and leadership roles that inspire the next generation of young women to see trades as viable, rewarding careers.
The Product That Proved Itself
The Northern Territory's extreme conditions – swinging from bone-dry to monsoon-wet – present unique challenges for pest management. Products need to perform consistently, regardless of the weather. For trainees learning their craft, they also need to deliver visible, reliable results. After trialing various products, the community found their answer in Syngenta's Advion Cockroach Gel.
"Advion was by far the quickest uptake for cockroaches of the bait we've used so far," Shane reported.
For new technicians, this quick uptake is crucial. It provides immediate feedback that their application technique is working, building confidence with every placement. In a remote location where follow-up visits mean significant time and travel, products that work fast and work reliably aren't just convenient – they're essential.
Community-Led Solutions
This program represents more than just pest control training. It's about empowering communities to solve their own challenges with professional-grade tools that deliver results. When local technicians can depend on their products to perform in some of Australia's toughest conditions, everyone benefits. The Palumpa Pesties story proves that with the right training, support, and reliable products, remote communities can build sustainable solutions that improve living conditions and create meaningful local employment.
Real training. Real results. Real impact.
